Bluestem Prairie Scientific and Natural Area

Marbled Godwit by James MattssonHabitat: Tallgrass prairie, wet prairie, sedge meadow, calcareous fen.

Features: This unit, managed by The Nature Conservancy, is over 4,600 acres and contains some of the best mesic prairie left in the state.
This preserve harbors more than 300 plant species and over 70 bird species.

Best Times To Visit: April through November.

Birds To Look For: Greater Prairie-Chicken, Sandhill Crane, Upland Sandpiper, Marbled Godwit, Loggerhead Shrike, Henslow's Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark (at the western edge of its range).

Notes For Birding The Area: Information and map available through The Nature Conservancy. Waterproof footgear recommended. Foot traffic permitted. Prairie chicken blinds are maintained here in April and early May and may be reserved by contacting The Nature Conservancy.
